ATD 2018 provides in-depth guidance for what you need to know to be successful. TTI SI acknowledges that when you reach your own full potential, you can adequately develop the talent around you. This gives your organization a fundamental competitive advantage - a workforce that is prepared to face the needs of today’s dynamic business environment.
We are eager to connect with business professionals from around the world, as well as enhance the quality of the services we provide to our clients and partners.
ATD is one of the largest events for talent development professionals worldwide. During our three-day attendance at ATD, we observed 5 key takeaways about this year’s event.
1. Microlearning continues to be a hot topic
Microlearning is a way of teaching and delivering content in small and specific bursts. This method allows learners full control of what and when they consume new material, and gives them the ability to quickly apply the new knowledge and skills acquired.
The average attention span of the Millennial generation is 90 seconds. Therefore, microlearning is a hot topic because by 2025, Millennials alone will make up 75 percent of the workforce. If organizations want to attract, develop and retain talent from this generation, they have to adapt to the ways of the Millennials.
2. Leadership is a main focus among professionals
A great deal of the expo providers and session topics during ATD 2018 pertained to leadership. It is apparent to many professionals that good leadership is one of the main reasons for business success. Leaders are responsible for making tough decisions and taking immediate action while achieving and maintaining credibility.
It is important to remember, however, that a great leader isn’t just someone who leads. It is someone that other people want to follow.
3. There is an emerging use of technology
A trend on the expo floor introduced offering viable, computerized business simulations with key datasets. The purpose of this is to be able to diagnose, predict and visualize organizational problems before they ever happen. As a result, individuals are becoming more stressed with significant adjustments in technology usage and need the proper resources and tools to address these issues.
4. Showing the return on investment (ROI) of a talent development solution is one the most common challenges for trainers
Buyers are not only looking for a solution that can solve their talent problem, but a solution with high ROI. However, measuring the ROI is not always as easy as it is perceived to be. As solution providers and facilitators, developing case studies and a methodology to measure the result is critical and will aid in future business successes.
5. The application of assessments continues to grow in the global market
Although assessments are gaining popularity, the market is very different globally than it is in the domestic market. Consider the trend in China, for example. More and more companies in China are using assessments - government owned companies, private companies and even higher education institutions. Interestingly, most of these companies use assessments in training instead of hiring. As a result, job benchmarking is still a fairly new concept in the Chinese market.
Another interesting fact we observed is that people are hungry for something new and different. A training solution based only on the DISC assessment is not enough anymore. When using DISC assessments for training in China, the concepts presented through use of colors is easier to understand by the users than through the use of the DISC letters alone. Therefore as solutions providers, it is critical to continue educating the local market and adapting to meet the needs of the local culture when implementing such tools.
ATD 2018 was a huge success. We are so glad we were able to meet professionals from all around the world and gain extensive new knowledge. This knowledge can be applied to our business to better serve our employees and clients and help them reveal their human potential.
